Dinosaurs!

11th May 2020

Dinosaur Fun!

A favourite topic in Nursery has always been dinosaurs! Unfortunately, we are unable to carry it out together, so I have put together a few play activities for the children to enjoy at home.

Not everyone has dinosaurs at home, not to worry! Use whatever you have and give them the dinosaur names!

Look at the pictures of the dinosaurs. Talk about the features. Eg: Triceratops as got 3 horns. Stegosaurus has got plates all down it’s back.

Have a go at clapping out the dinosaur names: Ty-ran-o-saur-us-Rex. Can you count how many claps are in the dinosaur names?

Using the dinosaur pictures from your pack, cut them up and place them on the table. Close your eyes and get a grown up to take one away, can you name the one that was taken away?

Give yourself and the people in your house a dinosaur name! My dinosaur name is Miss Caithnessosaurus!

Can you draw/paint/make a dinosaur using junk?

Look at the photographs that have been uploaded.

  1. Make a dinosaur world! I raided the blue bin and found a box and some toilet roll tubes. I found some tissue paper in my craft box. I went into the garden and found some natural materials to put into my Dinosaur World. Use your imagination! Once you have made your world, have fun playing!
  2. Make a dinosaur swamp! Our water tray in Nursery would be transformed into a Dinosaur Swamp. I found a sleigh in my garage and filed it with a wee layer of compost. I add some water to it, to make it runny. I found stones in the garden and added in the dinosaurs. Hours of fun to be enjoyed outside in the garden!
  3. Give the dinosaurs a bath! After the dinosaurs have played in the swamp, fill a basin with soapy water and give them a bath!
  4. Make some dinosaur ice eggs! How are you going to get the dinosaurs to hatch? Do you have any tools you could use? A great activity to talk about freezing and melting. Line a cup cake tray with cling film, this makes turning the ice eggs out a little easier. Fill each section with small dinosaurs or people. I found some daisies and dandelion flowers in the garden ad added them in too. Top them up with water and freeze them overnight.
  5. Play Splat! This is a fun game to help children to recognise and learn the names of the dinosaurs. Place the cut up dinosaur pictures onto the floor. Make a splat tool by rolling up a piece of paper. Get a grown up to call out a dinosaur name. Find the dinosaur that was called out and splat it with your splat tool!

Hope you enjoy the activities as much as I did! Remember, there’s no pressure to carry out any of the activities, but if you do we would love to hear how you got on! Send Mrs Dalzell and me through some pictures on Seesaw.

Stay safe and have fun!
