Scissor skills!
Using scissors are so important for the children’s wee hands. They develop their finger strength, hand/eye co ordination and their hand strength. Once these skills are developed and strength-end, the children will find holding and using writing tools with control.
Children love to cut and feel such a sense of achievement when they have finished their activity. Giving the children old magazines, catalogues or leaflets that come in through the door are great to use.
I’ve labelled the activities 1-6 on the photographs for you to enjoy at any time you fancy!
- Oh no! The toys have been captured and wrapped in tape! Can you use your scissors to help set them free!
- Draw some patterns on strips of paper and stick them to your table. Can you name the patterns that have been drawn? Start at the bottom of the strip and cut all the way to the top!
- My flowers had seen better days, but before I put them in the bin, I cut up the stems. I went out the garden and found some leave to cut up too. I put them into a bowl of water and had great fun pouring and filling using different sized spoons, bowls and jugs. I made flower potions!
- Get out side and cut the grass! Talk about the length of the grass. Can you make some grass soup? Count the strands of grass. Make a grass collage.
- I found different kinds of pasta in the cupboard. When it was raw I couldn’t cut it with the scissors. So I cooked it! The boiling water changed the pasta and made it soft and floppy. I was able to cut and snip. Can you see what picture I made? I snipped long pieces and short pieces.
- I think this activity is may favourite! It’s all about Humpty Dumpty! Can you remember the nursery rhyme and sing it? Get your grown up to draw a large oval shape on a piece of paper. Can you use your scissors and cut around the shape? When it is cut out, draw a face onto it. Get your grown up to draw some lines on the face and now cut those too. Poor Humpty Dumpty has fallen off the wall and broken into pieces! It’s time to put him back together! I used some plaster that were in my cupboard and got him all fixed up!
