Shape Fun with Miss Caithness!

22nd Apr 2020

Shapes are everywhere!

Look at the page that has the four shapes. Can you name each shape? Talk about each shape. What features does it have?

A circle is round and round. It doesn’t have any corners or straight sides.

A triangle has 3 side and 3 points. Can you count them?

A square has 4 sides and 4 corners. All the sides are the same size. Can you count them?

A rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners too! The rectangles sides are a little bit different though. 2 sides are short and 2 sides are long! Can you find the short sides? Can you find the long sides?

What shape am I? (tune: I’m a little teapot)

I’m a little triangle, look at me.

And count my sides one, two and three.

Whichever way I turn you’ll always see,

My sides are always one, two, three.

I’m a little rectangle sing my song.

Two sides are short and two are long.

I look just the same shape as a door.

Let’s count the sides one, two, three, four.

I’m a little circle, oh what fun!

I think I look just like the sun.

And even if I lay down on the ground,

My sides will still go round and round.

I’m a little square, this is my name.

For all my sides are just the same.

You can count my sides just to be sure.

There’s always one, two, three and four.

  • I went for a hunt around my house to see could I find anything that is a circle, square, rectangle or triangle. It was so hard finding a triangle shape! Go for a shape hunt. What did you find? Can you sort the items into shape groups? Count how many things you found in each group, which has the most?
  • Make a Shape Monster! You will need an envelope (any size/shape/colour), markers, paper, scissors and glue.Get your scissors and cut a strip of paper out. What shape does the strip look like? Snip the strip of paper into smaller shapes. I cut out rectangles, but you could do triangle shapes if you want. I also drew 2 circles on the paper and cut them out too.Now you can get decorating your monster. I drew and cut out 2 circles for the eyes, but you could draw them on if you want. My monster only has 2 eyes, maybe yours has more! How many? Use the markers and you can decorate your monster in what ever pattern you want.
  • Now shapes are your monsters favourite food! I drew and cut out some shapes. My monster was feeling pretty hungry so I had to give him some BIG shapes to eat! What size of shapes are your monsters eating?
  • Open up your envelope. Stick your small rectangle pieces (or triangles) along the edge. When you close your envelope up you will have made your monsters teeth!
  • Have a look at your envelope. What colour is it? What shape is it?

Remember, no pressure to carry out any of the activities, but if you do we would love to see them! Send them through to Mrs Dalzell and me on see saw.

Stay safe and have fun!
