Growing Plants Activities

26th May 2020

Hello boys and girls! Hope you and your families are all doing well.

This week’s activities are all about growing plants, the names of the parts of a plant, what plants need to grow and the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Have a look at the ‘Lifecycle of a Bean’ page that was in your learning pack.   Can you have a go at naming the different parts? Can you find a part of the plant when someone calls it out to you? What do plants need so that they grow?

Ask a grown up to search on YouTube for the following short videos:

  • We plant a seed
  • What do plants need to grow?
  • The needs of a plant
  • Peppa Pig Gardening

Have a look at the photographs I uploaded of my plants.                                                                            When I first decided to do some planting, I didn’t have any seeds! I remembered that I could find seeds in some fruit and vegetables, so I had a hunt in my fridge and found a red chilli. I cut open the chilli and planted 4 of the tiny seeds. I have looked after them and after a few weeks I saw a little shoot appear. I’ll keep watering my chilli plant and maybe some real chillies will grow for me to cook and eat! Can you find any seeds in your fridge or fruit bowl that you could plant? What do you think they will grow into?                                                                      I planted 2 bean seeds. The first bean seed I planted into a pot. It was covered up with soil so I didn’t know what was happening to the seed so I decided to plant the second bean seed into a glass. I put some kitchen roll into the glass and placed the seed to the side. I dampened the kitchen roll and after a few days, the root started to grow!                                                                                                                                                        The last thing I planted was my grasshead. When I was making eggs for breakfast I made sure that I didn’t break all of the shell. I cleaned the shell out and left it to dry. I found some grass seed in the garage and decided to plant the seeds into the shells to be like hair! If you don't have grass seed, use what ever seeds you have! When the hair grows long, get the scissors out and give it a trim! Don’t forget to give you egg grasshead a funny face!

Ask a grown up to read you the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. If you haven’t got the story, search on YouTube for ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and you could listen to one there.                                                                      Have a go at making a beanstalk using your imagination and your craft supplies. I’ve given you some ideas, but you do whatever you want!                                                                                                                          My favourite activity was using the bricks to build the Giant’s castle and making the clouds out of bubble foam! It was lovely to play with.

Hope you enjoy the activities as much as I did! Remember, there’s no pressure to carry out any or all of the activities, but if you do we would love to hear how you get on! Send Mrs Dalzell and me through a picture on Seesaw.

Stay safe and have fun!
